Stone-Set Pieces Are Assessed Before the Laser Is Used

There is no blanket answer here, and anyone who gives you one has skipped the assessment.

The Five Things Assessed on Every Set Piece

  • Gemstone type. Species differ in how they tolerate what happens near them; an unidentified stone is treated as the most sensitive case until it is identified.
  • Treatment. Fracture filling, dyeing, oiling, heat or diffusion treatment all change the picture, and a treated stone rarely announces itself.
  • Setting structure. Prong, bezel, channel, pavé or tension decides whether a stone can be shielded, has to be lifted, or must come out first.
  • Distance from the working area. How far the joint sits from the stone, and what path exists through the metal between them.
  • Heat sensitivity. The tolerance of that specific stone, in that specific setting, given everything above.
What we will not tell you: that all gemstones and metals can be processed safely under the same conditions. They cannot. If any element is unknown, we ask for photographs first, or ask you to send the piece stone-free.

Two pieces can carry the same karat mark and behave nothing alike. One was cast last month; the other has been sized twice, plated, polished thin at the back and carries solder no one recorded. A table addresses the alloy. It has never met the object in your hand.

Borrowed Settings Get Proven on Someone Else's Ring

Copy a stranger's parameters from a forum and your first live job is the trial. That job is on your bench, in your name, and it belongs to a customer standing at your counter.

  • An old solder seam reopens. Invisible before the heat arrives, obvious afterwards, and now a bigger repair than you took in.
  • Casting porosity opens at the joint. The surface looked sound; the inside was never solid.
  • A thinned section gives way. Polished down over years, it was thinner than it looked from above.
  • The area beside the weld changes. Plating and finish react around the zone, and refinishing it was never in your quoted job.
  • The loss is not a bench cost. A ruined test coupon costs metal. A ruined customer piece costs the customer.
Three · How we do it

Your Piece Is Run Under the Microscope, Not Described

The sample is set up in the open work area under the binocular microscope, on the same M3 configuration a shop like yours would order. We work from what you disclosed — alloy, thinnest section, joint form, prior repairs, stones, required finish. Where you sent scrap in the same stock, the approach is found on the scrap first. Everything tried is recorded, including what was abandoned.

What that means: the result you receive came from your object, not from a parameter chart written about a category.
Four · How to check it

What to Examine When the Piece Is Back on Your Bench

We publish no test statistics, because a statistic from our bench proves nothing about yours. Judge it yourself, at the magnification you actually work at:

  • Look beside the weld, not at it. Colour, texture and where the original polish stops tell you the refinishing you inherit.
  • Turn the piece over. Check the inside of the shank and the far side of the joint for what travelled through the metal.
  • Check the stone and setting. If anything stayed in place, inspect girdle, prong tips and bearing under your own loupe.
  • Weigh the finishing time. Ask whether the clean-up left fits inside the job time you can actually charge.
  • Compare with your own baseline. Put it next to the same repair done your current way. Better or worse than your result is the only question that pays.
Five · Where the limit is

What We Will Tell You Not to Send — and the Verdict You May Get

This path is only worth anything because a test can fail. We will not promise you a result before we have run one, and one honest outcome is: do not do this job on the M3. Some parcels we would rather you never posted:

  • Anything irreplaceable. Heirlooms and one-off customer pieces. Send an equivalent, or send photographs and let us talk first.
  • Unidentified stones still set. Until the species and any treatment are known, the assessment cannot be completed, so we ask for images or for the piece stone-free.
  • Work outside validated configurations. The M3 is validated for particular work on particular metals; anything past that gets reviewed, never assumed.
  • A throughput question. One sample cannot answer whether continuous production volume suits a shared bench station. It does not.
  • A machine you have already decided to buy. If the test cannot change your mind, it is not a test, and you are only asking us to agree with you.

The Decisions This Test Actually Lets You Make

A sample result is not a purchase order. It is evidence for four separate decisions, and one of them is to walk away.

  • Whether your bread-and-butter work runs on it. Not whether the machine is good — whether it suits the jobs that actually fill your week.
  • Which configuration to ask about. The M3 comes in multiple power configurations, and your own sample informs that conversation. Price and configurations.
  • What stays on your current method. Keeping one category on the torch or outsourcing it is a legitimate, and often correct, outcome.
  • Whether the gap is skill, not hardware. If the result is achievable but demanding, the honest next step is practice. Training and support.

Before you post anything

Questions Jewelers Ask Before Sending a Sample

Then that is what the report says, in those words. It is a genuine possible outcome, not a disclaimer we keep in reserve. The M3 does not replace every specialized machine for every application, and a sample test is the cheapest way for both of us to find the boundary before money moves. A refused sale is a bad afternoon for us; a machine you cannot use is a bad year for you.

Sometimes, and never as a general rule. Every set piece is assessed first on gemstone type, treatment, setting structure, distance from the working area and heat sensitivity. If a stone is unidentified or the treatment is unknown, the assessment stops there and we ask for photographs, or ask you to send the piece stone-free. Send images before the parcel whenever stones are involved.

Photographs are the right first step, and for stone-set work they are required before anything ships. What images cannot show is the state of the metal: old solder, porosity, a section polished thinner than it appears. That is exactly the information a real sample carries and a photograph does not, which is why the physical piece settles questions that a picture only frames.

Do not send it. Send an equivalent from your own stock, or scrap in the same alloy and the same section thickness, prepared with the same joint you struggle with. An equivalent coupon answers the question at no risk to a client relationship. Please treat anything irreplaceable as something we would rather never receive.

Not automatically, and we will not claim identical results for every operator. The test shows what the machine did with your material in practised hands; aiming under a microscope, choosing a starting point and reading a joint are skills built by repetition. Treat the sample as evidence about the material and the machine, and treat your own learning curve as a separate, real line item.

It informs that conversation rather than replacing it. Running your own material shows which direction your work pushes the specification, and the configuration discussion continues from there on the price and configurations page.
